What your score means
- 0–7 — Mild. Often just monitored.
- 8–19 — Moderate. Worth discussing options with your GP.
- 20–35 — Severe. See your GP; treatment usually helps.
The IPSS is a recognised questionnaire used by doctors worldwide. It measures symptom burden — it does not diagnose the cause (which can be benign enlargement, infection, or other conditions).
What is a normal IPSS score?
0–7 is considered mild. Many men have some symptoms with age; higher scores suggest more bother and are worth reviewing with a doctor.
Does a high score mean cancer?
No. The IPSS reflects urinary symptoms, most often caused by benign prostate enlargement. A GP can assess the cause.
